In a recent development, Rwanda received 288 mercenaries, predominantly snipers from Romania, who were fighting alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo’s army in their battle against the AFC/M23 group. The mercenaries, who had been stationed in Goma, surrendered to MONUSCO and M23 forces and were subsequently received at the La Corniche border crossing.

Sources confirmed that talks had taken place between the Rwandan and Romanian governments regarding the return of the mercenaries. The mercenaries would not spend the night on Rwandan soil and would continue their journey home to Romania via Kigali International Airport.

The cost of transportation from Rubavu District to Kigali International Airport is being covered by the Romanian government. The Deputy Spokesperson of the Rwandan Government, Alain Mukurarinda emphasized that the mercenaries could not pass through Rwanda without proper consultations with the government. He noted that Rwanda would facilitate their return despite their mercenary status, as it has a commitment to assisting those in need.

As the mercenaries make their way back to Romania it is evident that Rwanda is playing a crucial role in ensuring their safe return while upholding diplomatic protocols.

The Romanian mercenaries were allegedly employed by Horațiu Potra, an associate of pro-Russian politician Călin Georgescu, and sent to Goma to establish government control, according to PressOne. Potra, who faced legal troubles in Romania after he was accused of planning to incite protests and violating the rules regarding weapons and ammunition, previously confirmed that he established security for Georgescu with the help of former mercenaries who worked in Congo
